This is, as the name suggests, my first blog ever. Don't expect this blog to fill up with soap opera stories of my dramatic life. This will never happen. What will happen is that I'll get an inkling from time to time. I'll hear of something that just rubs me the wrong way, doesn't seem legit, realistic, sane, etc. I will confront this bothersome person, place, or thing in the most academic and logical way I can. Now I present to you the first victim of my plainly logical assault.
YOLO
You Only Live Once. Four words. Four very true words (unless you believe in reincarnation, in which it's more like Your Spirit Only Inhabits This Body Once, but YSOITBO doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.) Unfortunately, one of the greatest universal truths has been turned into an excuse to destroy your life.
People as young as their early teens and up are reporting that they have:
Had unprotected sex
Gotten pregnant from unprotected sex
Did drugs
Got caught with or under the influence of drugs by their family, friends, or law enforcement
Been injured or arrested doing something incredibly dangerous and/or destructive
How do they explain their self destructive behavior when questioned by concerned persons such as their, family, friends, or even the authorities?
YOLO! One acronym that conveys the belief that "because I'll only live once, that rationalizes me doing things that can potentially ruin my future, cause serious injury to myself or others, or get me arrested." I cringe every time I hear a YOLO story. I get a hard pressure in my left temple that leaves a sore mark for nearly an hour afterwards. This bombardment on my logical mind by such a nonsensical rationalization such as that is just mercilessly painful. I am just nineteen but I have always been considered advanced for my age. So it is with great sorrow that I confess that I am part of the YOLO generation.
Don't think I'm happy with this, but on the same note don't think that I'm going to deny my place amongst the foolish self destroyers. I would simply appreciate if any tech savvy teens out there would read this message and heed my words, and any responsible individuals will link this on their various social networking pages.
You only live once. That much is true. You can spend eighty years on this earth doing interesting things at every age. Make believe and dress up when you're young, sports in your teens and early twenties, spending time with loved ones, watching your kids do all those things, and traveling with your significant other when you're older. You can also start smoking, drinking, doing drugs, having unprotected sex along with many other destructive habits and activities when you're in middle school and die of any number of things from cancer to cirrhosis, AIDS complications to an overdose. You could end up in jail for the rest of your life.
Yes you only live once. That is the exact reason why I gave up a number of habits that have nearly ruined my life. A long life with my beloved wife is preferable to a short life full of drugs, violence, and a sexual partner for every day of the week and disease in the world.
Take YOLO back from the foolish youth. Show them that to live life like you'll never live it again is to cherish each moment rather then throw them to the dogs
Living life peacefully and happily
